Shree Dattatreya

गुरुर ब्रह्मा गुरुर विष्णु
गुरुर देवो महेश्वरा
गुरुर साक्षात परम ब्रहमा
तस्मै श्री गुरवे नम

Lord Dattatreya is an ancient and revered figure in Hinduism, considered the combined incarnation of the three main deities: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva (the Trimurti). Known as the universal Guru, he is the personification of knowledge and the ultimate spiritual teacher who offers guidance for liberation, or moksha. He is also depicted as the son of the sage Atri and his wife Anasuya, and is often shown with a cow, four dogs, and a trident.

  • Unified Divine Being: Dattatreya embodies the Trimurti, representing the harmony of creation (Brahma), preservation (Vishnu), and destruction (Shiva).

  • Universal Guru: He is considered the "Adi Guru," or primordial guru, and is revered as a teacher who provides spiritual wisdom and guidance to all beings.

  • Symbolic Depiction: He is often portrayed with three heads, symbolizing the Trimurti, and a cow and four dogs are frequently shown with him. The cow represents the Earth and Kamadhenu, while the four dogs are said to represent the four Vedas. The trident is sometimes said to indicate his transcendence of the three gunas (qualities of nature).

  • Spiritual Teachings: His teachings, detailed in texts like the Dattatreya Upanishad and the Tripura Rahasya, focus on achieving self-realization, understanding the oneness of the individual soul with the divine, and detachment from the material world.

  • Incarnations: He has appeared in various incarnations throughout different eras to guide his devotees, with notable figures in the current Kali Yuga including Sri Pada Sri Vallabha and Sri Narasimha Saraswati.

Lord Dattatreya is considered one of the 24 Vishnu incarnations. Lord Dattatreya was born of Rishi Atri and Anasuya. Dattatreya comprises Datta (Giver) and Atri (Sage Atri). He is considered the guru of environmental education. He gained enlightenment by observing his surroundings, which provided him with 24 gurus. These gurus explain the problems of mundane attachments and teach the path toward the spiritual self-realization of the Supreme.

Dattatreya left home at an early age to wander in search of the Absolute. He spent most of his life wandering between and including North Karnataka, through Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat up to the Narmada River. He attained realization at a town now known as Ganagapura in Karnataka. The original footprints of Dattatreya are believed to be located on the lonely peak at Girnar. The Tripura-Rahasya refers to the disciple Parasurama finding Dattatreya while meditating on Gandhamadana mountain. Lord Dattatreya made tapas for 12,000 years in Mount Girnar.
